Between 2019 and 2020, Russia experienced the highest winter temperatures in over 130 years. While meteorologists around the world greeted the event as a “once in a century” occurrence, for many it was a clear wake up call of the climate and environmental crisis affecting the country. If the average December temperature of Moscow is about -6.2 degree Celsius, in December 2019 it hardly dropped below 0 degrees. An unprecedented snow drought let the streets of Moscow full of puddles and wet sidewalks, while a dense and heavy to breathe air permeated the urban spaces. Goodbye winter offers a glimpse of the Russian capital plunged into the warmest winter in the country’s history since 1886.
